Grigor Gorgrivich: Now It Can Be Told

Grigor, possibly reflecting on his ways while in the big house ...

Looking back, you have to give it up for world-class henchman Grigor Gorgrivich.

Over his "career", constant employer changes meant the dude had to be adaptable, willing and able to conform to the quirks and kinks of a different bad guy boss on the drop. That meant he had to switch gears often, sometimes weekly. That takes some doing.

Grigor and one of his many employers ...

Henchmen, by nature, are the work horses of the ne'er-do-well set. They're subject to demeaning, menial, sometimes back-breaking (literally) chores doled out by their bosses with little to no credit for their efforts.

And yet, through it all, he was the consummate professional.

Typical henchman stuff ...

As my colleagues Clark and Jeff have noted, it's a rough gig. And, given the many run ins we've had over the years with Grigor, how could we not show up at his farewell shindig? It's not as if something like that comes up often, you know.

So it was with honest, sincere wishes we three attended Grigor's event and celebrated his many and varied accomplishments along with his fellow coadjutants. (Note: The sad thing about the affair? While a majority of his fellow associates were present, not one of his past employer could be troubled to show up. What a bunch of uncaring bastards.)

And now that all is said and done, I'm able to divulge a little secret I've harbored over the years from everyone. Something I'm not ashamed to admit but was better left unsaid at the time. I thought it best to keep it on the downlow, even from my fellow Unbelievables.

Grigor Gorgrivich was a good friend of mine. And we shared a covert association outside our "work" as good guy / bad guy.

Jeff and Clark restrain Grigor
during one of his many confrontations with The Unbelievables

It was the aftermath of a rather brutal tussle involving The Unbelievables and a rather large contingent of henchmen, Grigor included. (I don't recall who he was working for at the time - his constant employer-switching leave me unaware who was calling the shots at the time.) The scene was a mess: Subordinates, helpers, aides, lackeys and body guards were piled up in a mound post-ass beating, complete with plenty of scrapes and bruises, the air hanging heavy with the sound of moans and groans. "Another fine job, gents," Clark commented. "Let's let the police handle the mop up details," Jeff offered. As they took off, I stayed back and sidled up to Grigor who was lying on the ground, beaten to a pulp, and I talked with him plainly as he lay prone on the ground:

"You know, Grigor, I like you. Enough to offer you this: This henchman thing? It isn't for everybody, as you can well see. But you? You're good at what you do. And I appreciate that, especially when it comes to your loyalty to your bosses, whoever that may be currently. I just wanted you to know that. See you in three to six months on good behavior."

I guess that little chat struck a cord because not a few weeks later I got a clandestine thank you card from the big galoot, which I'll admit was surprising.

That's when our furtive friendship blossomed outside our respective fields.

"Griggy" and I started getting together for little social events, just he and I. A beer at a quiet pub far outside of town, a bowling night here and there, a refreshing sauna where we chewed the fat and shared a laugh over our respective crafts. We secretly did a 4-day Disney World tour, an Atlantic City weekend and, once, a houseboat fishing trip down in Rosarito not too long ago. Good times, good times.

In the beginning, Griggy wasn't very good with his charms ...

... but with my help he came around.
(Hello, Ladies!)

You can see how this cooperative could lend to raised eyebrows among our respective colleagues, thus the reason our outings were kept closeted.

A rare snapshot of Grigor and Michael on one of their getaways.
(I'm in disguise, on the right.)

So it was with a special and personal undertaking I attended Grigor's going away party.

And I'll confess: I had to hold back a tear or two during the bash for Griggy. I knew his "retirement" meant the end of our clandestine ventures.

*sniff*

Thanks For Giving

Yes!

With the bird having been in the oven since last night, the cranberry freshly prepared and all other foodstuffs ready to go, The Unbelievables are looking forward to tons of festivities this long weekend, festivities to rival ... well ... past Thanksgivings.

And that includes the first ever Unbelieva-Babes all-Thanksgiving calendar.

Jeff showcased some of the pictorials the gals are planning for the extravaganza and I - in between food preparation and getting Jeff to peel the potatoes (not such a difficult chore) - managed to kype a few myself.

Care for an additional pre-ogle? That's what I thought ...

Some of the girls are ecstatical about doing the calendar ...

Some of the gals? They're being a bit to literal about the entire affair.

"Wishfully" cute ...

This one (entitled "dead bird walking") was a reject.

One of the Unbelieva-Babe's moms tried sneaking one in.
This one was nixed before it got too far ...

Yes, we wondered if there was anything underneath that apron.
Your guess is as good as ours.
Cheeky!

One caring Unbelieva-Babe thought it a good idea
to make the bird feel a bit more "loved" ...
... prior to its decapitation.

Both Clark and Jeff "stood in" for the fowl in this image.
To see if the pose worked, you understand.
(Uh huh.)

Clark will wrap up the week (tomorrow!) with ... well ... we're not certain.

But whatever it is it's probably a good idea to be prepared. In the meantime:

Cripes and cripes! I need to get to gettin' ... !!! The guys have already started polishing everything off!
Clark and Jeff in au natural. Typical.

Bananarama Pajama Drama

As you are by now acutely aware, we Unbelievable types have many friends (moles, contacts, informants) in the business known as show. Some of our more interesting stories involve talented celebrities who requested our assistance in some form or another. This is one of those stories.

Back in the 1980s we were lucky enough to become acquainted with three lovely ladies who went by the names of Siobhan, Keren and Sarah. Collectively they went by the monicker Bananarama. At least, they did after they met us.

When first we encountered the 'Nanas, they were a gospel trio that had hit upon hard times. It was in a little taverna in ol' Piedras Negras, right across the Texas border, that we found what were then known as The Faith Tones, singing their little hearts out and desperately trying to flog the last few remaining copies of their one and only LP Jesus Use Me out of a battered suitcase propped up against a sleeping Mexican drunk (who knew they even existed?) who himself was propped up against the upright piano.

L to R: Keren, Sarah, Siobhan.

We were there on another case involving an aloe-smuggling ring we had uncovered via our great pal, the late great DK - Don Knotts to the folks at home. But I digress.

While sipping the local brew we discussed the merits of the trio of ladies in the corner.

"These kids need help," mused Michael.

"You're not wrong there, bucko, " riposted Clark. "Someone needs to tap them and tell them."

I pondered for a moment and decided we should introduce ourselves, so after another rousing chorus of Rock Of Ages we sidled over and told them who we were.

"Oh wow!" replied Siobhan. "We love you guys - and Jesus, of course."

Sarah interjected, "Oh my Gawd, can you guys help us? We are not doing well here, as you can see. In fact, you could say we're sucking wind. Surely three stylish gents such as yourselves can help us out a little?" Those may not have been her exact words, but you get the gist.

We were taken aback by the charming Sarah's unabashedly upfront approach, and after a short discussion agreed to take the girls under our wing and give them a top-to-bottom inside-out makeover.

We told them to lose the up-do hairstyles and go for something a tad more funky-punky. The uptight church clothes were to be swapped for loose, baggy yet feminine urban streetwear. The clunky pumps traded in for hi-tops and hiking boots. And that name? The Faith Tones? Ditch that and go all out with something silly. The daftest name you can think of. Well, on TV at the time was an episode of ITV's Dramarama - so after playing with it for a minute or two, Bananarama were born.

See how much happier they look? Especially after Keren got contacts.
We used our showbiz contacts to get them some studio time and a few choice session players to back them up, and after a while, the name Bananarama was on everyone's lips.

But that isn't the end of the story. Oh no.

A few years later the 'Ramas requested help from us again - this time to hunt down a bootlegger who was clearly confused, selling tapes of old demos under the Bananarama name, yet decorating his product with pictures of the foul and repellent children's characters Bananas In Pajamas. Eeesh. The last thing the ladies wanted was their good name tainted and besmirched by the talent-free oversized fruits.

Well, we hunted down the culprit - wasn't that hard, actually, ya just gotta know where to look -  and the ladies were so grateful they showed us their pajamas.  Well, not so much pajamas as inflatable bananas really.

And then we naturally dated them all for a while.  Good times, good times...

But this wasn't the only time we've helped Z-listers become A-listers, was it boys?

The Saga Of Michael and Luanne

Hoo boy. Relationships, eh? A lot of the time they can be tricky things to keep in balance. It's like being a tightrope walker - one wrong step and the show's over. You might as well stay home and play a board game just to be on the safe side.

Maybe not this particular one, though.
And it's probably best not to try this, either...

Because after all, isn't the image we have of the perfect relationship something like this?

But all too often it ends up being more like this?

And we Unbelievables have, with relatively few exceptions, managed to keep our relationships with the ladies (Hello, ladies!!!) in control. But in a few cases, such as the one mentioned on Monday by Clark (thanks for that, by the way, Clark) things have gone south in double-quick time.

Here's an excellent example of a relationship that went pear-shaped in short order.

Michael met this lovely, attractive girl Luanne from the typing pool. She seemed like the kind of girl any international butt-kicking crimefighting playboy would want on his arm - cute, smart, funny etc. - but just like every superhero has an inner demon or a major character flaw or a secret weakness, Luanne had one thing that let her down and let her down big time.

She couldn't take her liquor. By which I mean she could drink it just fine, but once she did, it brought out some unpleasant traits which caused Michael to reconsider his eagerness to date this otherwise charming young lady.

Fig. 1: After a couple Singapore Slings Luanne became overly touchy-feely, playing with his ears and making Michael look a complete sap.

Fig. 2: Dismayed by Michael's dislike of the public displays of ear-fondling, Luanne gets even more drunk. As you can see by his expression, Michael is regretting coming out on this date.

Fig. 3: Once home, Michael finds himself in the awkward position of trying to sober up a mean drunk. She can't even be bothered to sit like a lady.
So as you can imagine, Luanne was a dud. Michael did let her down easy, but that's life, isn't it? She'll get over it.

So what does it take to stop your love life from looking like this (see below)?

"I hate you, I hate your friends, I hate this drink, and I hate the way you just stand there grinning like an idiot."

I think I have found the answer from some of my fellow countrymen...

It's me! Right? Of course it is.

I know Jeff and Michael have written entries about the saucy comment we received from a "Teresa W" regarding her desire to sleep with an Unbelievable but I didn't read them. I don't need to. Because I know I'm the one that she wants and it doesn't matter what they say.
Listen, I love my crime-fighting colleagues. We're like brothers. But come on. Face facts.
Jeff = British.
Michael = Utterly obsessed with sweaters.
Me = Neither of those things.
Plus, who has the car?

Boom, right? Exactly.
So listen, Teresa W. Let me talk to you. (Dim lights, cue Al Green record)
Hey girl.
Mmmm. You look good, baby.
Please allow me to quote myself: "Mmmm".
Yeah baby. Lookin' very good!
Like a submarine sandwich. Not from a fast food restaurant or a grocery store but from a deli.
Ooh yeah. Cold cuts. Veggies. A nice Italian dressing on a soft roll. Everythang!
What's that? You call them hoagies? That's cool, baby.
But listen, girl.
We got some things we gotta get straight between us before we can proceed to the smooshing of bodies together, you dig?
The Nazi thing? Yeah, I ain't feelin' that.
Nazis aren't sexy.
Sure, they're funny. They're hilarious!
Sometimes

But not sexy.
There are other uniforms I can wear instead. Like a UPS man. Or a cop. Or the guy you call when a raccoon crawls under your house and dies.
Does that work for you, baby? Yeah, I thought so.
I know I said we had things to straighten out, like, as in, "more than one", but that's really it. Everything else is good to go.
Because perpetrators of hatred and genocide ain't my bag, baby.
Mmmm.

Call Me, Maybe ...

So ... we got a comment a week ago Wednesday. A rather interesting one at that:

At the risk of identifying myself as a bad person, I find the damsels in distress at the hands of the Nazis a highly erotic concept. Also, I would like to sleep with one of the Unbelievables. Which one of those two statements is worse? - Teresa W

I don't know what Clark's take on it is - we'll find out what he has to say soon enough - but I can tell you in no uncertain terms Jeff is dead wrong with his assessment.

The comment is not a set up, it's not fake and it certainly isn't any sort of ruse. But Jeff got one thing right: The commenter's sign-off - "Teresa W" - is a pseudonym of the word "sweater" ... and an obvious nod to the fact she's enamored with The Unbelievables and our unique fashion sense.

Which one, however? Which Unbelievable does she gravitate toward?

Me, of course.

The skeptical among you (yes, I'll admit there probably are one or two of you out there) will require proof Teresa W has her sights set on yours truly. I'm more than willing to offer up foundations for my claim:

Obvious Exhibit of Proof #1: Sweater Fantastickness

Yep. That's me all right. Burden of proof lifted. One glance at that photo and there's no further need. It's worth a thousand words, you know.

Obvious Exhibit of Proof #2: A Mountain of Stud

Oh, okay. One more picture.

Here I am in all my undercover moustachioed glory in one of The Unbelievables' more notorious cases, "Dudes." Now ... enough with the photographic evidence. Teresa W is probably reading this right now mad with desire.

Obvious Exhibit of Proof #3: Treating The Ladies Right

The Unbelievables have the distinct power to elevate the ladies ("Hello, Ladies!") to heights they never thought possible. Teresa W is no doubt aware of this. Be it a Vegas showgirl, an Unbelieva-Babe or other, credentials such as those added to your resume will get you further than you can imagine! And while Jeff and Clark are just as capable, I show special concern and added attention in those areas ... if you know what I mean.

Obvious Exhibit of Proof #4: Education

Speaking of job opportunities, get in good with The Unbelievables and we provide further value added services. Long ago I put together a little computer primer for the fairer sex which only a lucky few are privy to. Because you can't walk out the door of your house without bumping into a computer during your day, you might as well become knowledgeable in their workings. This is an excellent instructional guide! (Note: Dorothy Heller and June Bower were my personal ghost writers for this tome.)

You know what? I think that's plenty of proof right there as basis for the rhyme and reason of Teresa W's wants. After all, I don't want to look like a braggart.

Teresa W? Call me maybe...

Unbelieva-chillax-a-haiku

Clark told you all on Monday about his way of relaxing - meditation and haiku. Fair enough. I like poetry. But I find the best way to take my mind off the stresses and strains of being part of an amazing triumvirate - that is, being an Unbelievable -
is to combine the meditating and the haiku-writing with some other relaxing pursuits, or even to write about the relaxing pursuits while doing the relaxing pursuits (with me so far? Good.).

So, what do I find relaxing? So glad you asked. Below are some examples of my craft - poems written while engaged in one or more of the relaxing pursuits I mentioned before. (Confused? Don't be. It will all become self-explanatory.)

1 - BOOZE

To be Frank Gifford

So effortlessly stylish

Dry Sack On The Rocks

Charlie Brown's hero

Water, Barley malt, Rice, Hops, Yeast

Taste IS why you'll switch

2 - MASSAGE

Dude, I think you should

Climb on top of my shoulders

Wearing a towel.

Foxy lady on

A big leather couch, listen

While I knead your spine.

Ultrasonic thing

Invented by Japanese

Water massager.

The Vita Master

Lots of rollers go around

And rub my sore back.

3 - COCKTAILS

(Ok, I know that's still technically booze, but I got a load of these.)

Lemon juice, white rum

Passion fruit juice, add crushed ice

Sugar syrup. Drink.

How I miss those days

When your local liquor store

Carried Black & White.

4- LONG HOT BATHS

Oh, to drift away

In glowing pink hot water

A big wet disco.

5 - ANIMALS

More like animals

Is what we should strive to be

They know how to chill

6 - LADIES (HELLO, LADIES!!)

Pretty young woman

With two cases of Molson

Prithee, come hither

7 - ICE CREAM

I'd like to consume

Many bars of delicious

Korean ice cream.

8 - FUNKY FURNITURE

Michael's room is filled

With weird chairs and strange sofas

They're really comfy.

9 - WATER

Splashing around in

A giant fountain is fun

When I'm in London.

Hope you enjoyed my poetic efforts. Let's see how Michael fares on Friday.
